Peachtree Corners City Councilman Eric Christ said that, like many residents, he is concerned about the decrease in Waste Management’s service level. He added that he requested a briefing by the City Manager regarding this issue at the Oct. 25 City Council meeting.
Waste Management (WM), the municipal solid waste hauler for the city, provides garbage and recycling collection services to Peachtree Corners residential homes.
In his recent newsletter, Christ pointed out that the issue is related to the record low unemployment nationally (the lowest since 1969), in Georgia (the lowest since at least 1976) and in Gwinnett (the lowest since 2000).
“Waste Management is struggling to fill their open positions and simply does not have enough staff to consistently deliver trash, recycling and yard waste pick up services at the level we expect and that our contract requires,” Christ explained.
“Regardless, this is no excuse for the lack of communication by Waste Management with their customers,” he continued. “I asked City staff to use the leverage in our contract to insist on better and more timely communication, along with getting answers on what will be done in the near-term to improve these service levels.”
Christ also requested that the PTC Fix-It system be updated to include an option to report missed pickups. “I’m pleased to say that this feature is now available,” he reported.
The councilman shared advice for Peachtree Corners residents. If a pickup is missed:
Leave the trash, recycling or yard waste in place. “Waste Management claims they will come back to collect it even if that means sending out crews on Saturdays,” Christ said.
Report the issue via the PC Fix-It system. “This will alert the Public Works Department to the problem,” he added.
The Fix-It app is available for free on the smartphone app store. Search for “PC Fix-It.”
Alternatively, residents can file a report on the City’s website. Be sure to select “Garbage/Recycling missed” as the report type and include the specific street address.
