Gwinnett County Youth Commission Accepting Applications

Time is running out for teens interested in a role of citizen participation to apply for the Gwinnett County Youth Commission. It’s a widely held belief that for effective democratic governance, all citizens should be involved. Although we learn how government works in social studies and civics classes, there is no better teacher than hands-on participation.

Even though this is arguably a good idea, it is not widely practiced and understood. Young people, as well as society as a whole, can benefit from youth involvement in the government process. Under the concepts of civic engagement and positive youth development, students may develop feelings of empowerment, competence and connection. They can gain information about their options and rights, develop decision-making skills, develop an understanding of decision processes and gain a sense of control.

Thus, participation may also enhance young peoples’ interests and propensity to engage in community service, political action or other forms of public engagement. For some, it may facilitate career interest and development in public service. And as a matter of social justice, youths have a right to engage in decisions that impact their lives.

The Gwinnett Youth Commission is year-long program that includes an eight-week summer program designed to educate youths about local government, engage them in civic affairs and provide an opportunity for youths to affect change in their community. Youths will get behind-the-scenes tours of Gwinnett County Government departments, interact with government leaders and receive community leadership training designed to foster the next generation of leaders for Gwinnett County.

There is no cost to participate in this program. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as transportation for field trips. Transportation to and from the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center before and after sessions, and to school-year meetings and events will not be provided.

The class is limited to 30 participants each cycle. Selections will be made by an independent committee based on eligibility and a typed essay. Students selected for this program will represent a cross section of Gwinnett County.

Interested candidates must complete an application and eligibility will be verified. The application deadline for the 2022-2023 program is Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. Accepted youths will be notified in early May.
