Construction Update: Bush Road at Medlock Bridge Road Project

Bush Road and Medlock Bridge Road

Improvement Work Temporarily Stalled

According to Louis Svehla, Communications Director for the City of Peachtree Corners, the city has been experiencing delays in the construction project that is underway to make improvements at the intersection of Medlock Bridge Road and Bush Road.

This is due to things that are beyond the city’s control, such as utility issues and the review being done by Gwinnett County. “There were several changes that the county made that have put us behind,” he said.

Despite everything, Svehla noted that construction is expected to begin again soon. He did caution, however that the outstanding issue that could continue to delay the job would be the ability for the county to obtain the correct products necessary to complete construction, due to supply chain issues.

“We do not have a firm date on when we expect construction to be completed as the product acquisition is a big question mark,” Svehla said. “If we can get the correct product, we feel the job can be done on a quicker time frame.”

The Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of Georgia held its annual awards banquet on Wednesday, November 13 at Maggiano’s Cumberland Mall in Atlanta.

This year, Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners was awarded the 2024 Outside the Construction Box Award for setting up ghost intersections on Peachtree Parkway (State Road 141). These ghost intersections parallel GDOT facilities and use advanced monitoring, detection, data capture and movement ID allowing them to simulate and test how emerging ITS technologies will work in live scenarios.

The City of Peachtree Corners previously won this award in 2019 with the opening of Curiosity Lab.

About the award

Innovation: Outside the “Construction” Box Award

A creative and unique approach or solution, by an individual or group, to an ITS challenge or issue using ITS architecture, software deployments, network engineering or any other ITS application that is not directly related to a typical ITS construction-esque type project.

About ITS Georgia

The Intelligent Transportation Society of Georgia is a state Chapter of ITS America. ITS America is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to advancing the research, development and deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve the nation’s surface transportation system.

ITS America and ITS Georgia members are organizations that believe these technologies can significantly improve the performance of our transportation system and that have a stake in the success of ITS. The ITS stakeholder groups are typically identified as transportation agencies, transportation system users, ITS technology and service providers, and other agencies whose missions are about or affected by the transportation system.

Peachtree Corners Enlists IMS to Conduct Pavement Survey

Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS-2)

Residents of Peachtree Corners will soon have an objective assessment of the town’s pavement. Using funds dedicated to infrastructure management, the City has contracted with Infrastructure Management Services (IMS) to conduct the pavement survey.

The company has over 30 years of experience in the field of pavement management and has helped municipalities throughout the United States and Canada. IMS will be responsible for completing an objective pavement condition survey as well as a budget and rehabilitation analysis.

IMS survey vehicles hit the streets in early October using their Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS-2). The LCMS-2 is a 3D imaging sensor that collects continuous 3D pavement imagery along with rutting and roughness measurements.

How it works

The LCMS-2 will determine surface distresses including load cracking, block cracking, rutting, raveling, reflective cracking, loss of section, bleeding, edge distress and patched areas. Information will be collected on a segment-by-segment basis. The collected data and imagery will be linked to the City’s existing GIS data system.

Once the data has been collected, the City will create a work program using a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) that will rate road segments between poor and excellent. The City will then use the PCI rankings to create an infrastructure work plan based on actual road conditions.

This data-based planning will allow Peachtree Corners to provide more efficient and equitable repairs and maximize the City’s repair budget.
